Collaborations with Mr. McKenzie

In the first semester of the 2021-22 school year, my Leadership and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) classes kicked-off a number of collaborations with Mr. McKenzie, Polk Middle School gardener, food justice advocate, and science teacher. Polk's community garden was at the center of most of our collaborations.

Sixth, seventh, and eight-grade STEAM students dug into vermiculture, composting, and the characteristics of soil. Along with Leadership students, we got our hands dirty planting fall tulips under the umbrella of School Beautification and the inspiration of Journey North.

This semester--second semester--students will engage in project-based learning and more deeply explore what it means to be a leader within the context of middle school and how we might promote a school recycling program, minimize food waste, and encourage healthier, less-processed school meals.

Stayed tuned for more updated and, as always, thank you for reading.
